Gratitude...Seeing the good in yourself and your hair.

Originally posted 7/2018

I know I haven’t posted for a while, there have been some exciting but time-consuming things going on. We purchased the house that we have been renting for the last three years, put to bed some loose ends from my former salon. And lastly, my daughter Dakota and I took a little trip to upstate New York; were able to spend a weekend with a friend we hadn’t seen in three years and meet her youngest child.

Life alone is not without its annoyances either. During my break from blogging, my car was sideswiped in front of our house. The driver left no note or took responsibility for their actions. I would imagine the person was happy they got away with it but also felt guilty that they damaged someone else’s property. I was discussing the situation with one of my clients, and she said to be grateful no one was hurt, and I was, but it got me thinking about gratitude.

Over the last year, I have developed a better sense of what is worth getting upset about and what is just a blip in my day. However, even with my new-found inspiration some mornings when I sit down to write in my journal I struggle with gratitude. My natural tendency is to stare at the blank page and try to decide what is worthy of being counted as blessings in my life because so many details of our lives swirl around in our heads each day. I do believe that if you have more gratitude, you will have a happier and more content life.

Recently, I have seen that to be true. And what I have realized/ found is that consistency is critical, reminding myself on a regular basis to look around and notice the things for which I am grateful.

While browsing the internet, I stumbled upon some videos on YouTube that focus on motivation and inspiration. And one resonated with me. I was aware after listening to it my day went better I felt happier inside, and I looked at things around me with a different attitude.

So, this has become a ritual that I try to practice every day or at least 4-5 times a week. [I find it to be easiest to do while I am getting ready in for work in the morning; it primes my day for success.] I also like to play it in my car or when I’m going for walks. It’s on YouTube, but that doesn’t mean you have to watch the screen, just listening in the background is excellent.

I love to share these videos with family and friends, especially when a person pops into my head while I am listening to one, I just hit share and text it to them. I do this for two reasons; One because I love to empower people and help them find ways to see the good in life as well as about themselves. Secondly, I want people to know they are thought about and are important to me.

When I am working with clients, I hear a great deal about their lives. Most of the time they (new clients especially), are coming to me to help with a concern, something that makes them unhappy. I have noticed if I can get the person to see all the positive things about their hair it is easier to fix the things they feel are “wrong.” In general, I feel we as people “stare” at the wrong things and overlook the good /positive aspects of our lives.

So, the next time you are staring in the mirror, and you are thinking how bad your hair is, or how it isn’t cooperating with you. Try thinking of all the ways it is right or take that minute to write down what you don’t like to bring them to your stylist, and perhaps they can help you conquer the issue. I know they can give you examples of positives about you and your hair.

We can all use some help finding positivity in ourselves and the world around us. So, other ways that I find good vibes as well as ways to clear my mind and let gratitude in is to meditate for 10-15 min in the morning or the evening. My goal is to do it both times a day… still working on that. Another thing I do, I am working on is unplugging from my phone for the first hour of the day. By not allowing all the noise from text messages, the social media world, emails, and notifications I feel calmer right off the bat.

To end and give you something to take with you I thought I would share an article from a great website Lifehack.com with a list of positive things you can say to yourself each day.
